If you've got some inside info on holland, let Rob know by posting your thoughts below. He's after some great places to see, comfortable places to sleep, yummy places to eat...not to forget areas to avoid too!

On our way to Switzerland, Hanne and I spent 2 days in Amsterdam – 1980. A trip on the canals was fun. Can't remember much else.

The netherlands is the best country for bicycle-maniacs, like you. You will love it. The people are fantastic, the food is international, everybody is able to speak english and there are so many beautiful places and Amsterdam is just one of them. It is a fantastic city, I think, although I got my bicycle stolen, twenty years ago. But what a great city if you have the chance to stay there for a couple of days. Van Gogh Museum and a lot more, waterways and "flee markets" and a lot of happy people all around. Amsterdam the Beautiful. Try to make friends beforehand to get a good place to stay, otherwise hotels will be a bit expensive. Good Luck!

Rob,

In Holland you may be trying to cycle alongside the railway which uaually runs next to the freeway (or highway or speedway or however you call it in Holland they Dutch call it Autostrada a la Italian). NOTE: Within the Netherlands there is possibly the most extensive cycle path network in the world which may NOT run alongside the major roads or railway lines and could be kilometers away from the major road making them more scenic and safer. You are strongly advised to obtain a detailed cycle network map not an ordinery street map and if you can, before you enter Holland (You can buy one at German book stores).
