Pre-Departure (57 days): Bandwidth issues

As expected, having my videos uploaded to my server has caused a big spike in bandwidth use. Currently this month’s bandwidth usage is 3.5GB compared with 250MB last month. My bandwidth limit is 5GB. Therefore considering that I only uploaded the videos halfway through this month, next month would definitely be suspect if I left the videos on my server.

I have fixed the issue by linking to the videos as they are on Google Video. This means that a new page opens up with the videos in their embedded state in Google Video, but I guess there is nothing better I can do at this stage, apart from buy more bandwidth, which I’m not too keen on doing.

Embedding the videos on my website is proving to be more of a headache than it’s worth, so I’m giving up at this point. I did have the VideoBlogger plugin working for a bit, but then the blog comments wouldn’t work…

    Dear Rob,

I have seen a system for hosting video called "YouTube" which appears to be nearly ubiquitous for blog / website hosted video.

It also appears to be very easy to embed.

Here's a link to a page that should let you progress with remotely hosted video on your blog.

Kenny, thanks for the info. I have acutally checked out You Tube before. However the problem isn't the video hosting service. Google Video and You Tube are just as good as each other, but if you have a 'self made' wordpress blog, you can't just embed the videos by cutting and pasting the code provided. This is coz WordPress doesn't allow posting of objects like movies and flash objects.

If however I had a 'ready-made' WordPress blog, that is, hosted by WordPress, then I could easily embed videos using the special code that WordPress provides.

The short story is that I need to install a plugin to display videos on my blog, but because I have played around too much with the WordPress code, it looks as though the plugins won't work on my website.

You never know, I may end up working it out one of these days…

    Thanks,

    Rob

    Hello again Rob,

I'm going to risk sounding like an idiot here, but have you tried the "code" button in WordPress?

When writing a post with the standard WordPress, you can hit "Code", paste your embedding code, and hit "Code" after the embedding code from Google is pasted. That allows wordpress to ignore it and add it to the blog entry the way Google intended.

I have tried this with one of your videos, not with a live post though I hasten to add, and it worked okay for me.

Here is a link to an image that describes what I'm talking about.

If you have indeed already tried this, or it's not applicable to your ’self made’ WordPress blog, I'd be really happy to recieve an email from yourself with further info regarding your WordPress setup, such that I can help further.

    Hope this helps,

    Kenny

    Kenny,

Thank you again for looking further into this.

I have indeed tried just using the direct html editor in the post menu, but to no avail :(

Is your blog a WordPress hosted blog? That is, did you sign up for a blog with WordPress rather than installing it yourself on your own server?

It's great to be getting feedback from another WordPress user about this – gives me something to reference from.

By the way, feel free to embed my video on your site if you feel that the video is worthy of it! 😉

    Cheers,

    Rob

    Hi Rob,

I have installed WordPress on the server space I get from my ISP.

Using the WordPress "code" markup around the html from google video works for my setup.

My email address is subflux at gmail.com ; rather than take up all your comment space, I'm happy to continue to try an help as much as I can via email.

    Happy riding,

    Kenny
