When cycle tourists enter or leave Hokkaido, they will often fly in or out of New Chitose Airport (Sapporo Airport). This means that many a cycle tourist finds themselves needing a bike box in Chitose City in order to pack their bike up before checking it in as luggage. This also means that I occasionally I get questions from cyclists and cycle tourists about where they might find bike boxes in Chitose.

In order to not repeat myself too much, below is a list of bike shops in Chitose City that periodically have old bike boxes lying around that they will be happy to give to cyclists. Generally, expect bike boxes that measure around 130cm in length, 80cm in height, and 30-40cm in width. Larger boxes are difficult to find in Chitose, so you may need to dismantle your bike a little more than usual

P.S., I wish that the featured image above was a bike store in Chitose. Alas, it is not. It is the drool-worthy Blue Lug Cycle Store in Tokyo.

NOTE: Just as an aside, if you’re looking for repairs or parts for a typical cycle touring bicycle, none of these bike shops in Chitose really cater to anything higher than low- to mid-range bicycles. Head to one of the following bike stores in Sapporo for higher-end/common touring bicycle parts and service.

  1. We are planning to visit Hokkaido in mid-October and intend to do a bike tour. We would like to inquire about bike rental options near Chitose town or the airport. Additionally, could you recommend a beginner-friendly cycling route?

  2. Hi Rob!

I just ran across this very helpful blog. I am toying (very hard) with cycle touring Hokkaido for one month in Seltember this year. Can you tell me if the weather is good for that and what to expect in terms of greenery, flowers, fall colors? And can you recommend a circle route and start and end point? I am all ears!!

  3. Hi, we would fly from Singapore to Sapporo with our bikes in bike boxes (we use Evoc and bike box Alan). Where would we best leave/store them while we tour Hokaido for 2 weeks?

    1. Your best bet would be to book accommodation for the first and last nights of you trip, and leave the boxes with them (check with the accommodation first).

  4. Hi Rob

We are planning to bike in Hokkaido in Mid-June for 1-2 weeks only, and plan to start riding at Chitose Airport. We are not taking our own bikes so do you have any idea that we can rent bikes from Chitose Airport and return at Airport or Sapporo ?

  5. Hi do you sell Brompton Folding Bicycle? Im looking for a Lagoon Blue M6R Model. I will be in Hokkaido sometime end of October 2017.
If you have kindly give me your best price, offers and I can buy from you and ride there.
    Thank you.

    1. Hey David, this is a bicycle-touring blog, not a bike shop…but, if you are after a Brompton in Sapporo, your best bet is the Shugakuso Outdoor store in Shiroishi Ward (location: https://goo.gl/maps/jQ7diMc6s6x). They have a bicycle section on the basement floor that has a huge selection of Bromptons.

    2. Ah, by the way, the end of October is getting pretty cold in Hokkaido. By the beginning to middle of November, we usually have at least a couple of snowfalls (snow usually melts after a day). By the end of November, you may struggle on a Brompton if you’re still here in Hokkaido. Further south in Japan will be fine though!

  6. Hello,

I’m looking for a bike shop in Hokkaido that can service Campagnolo Record cassette. I think the cassette body is coming loose.
I’m guessing any decent shop could do it, but if there is one that is familiar with Campy that would probably be better. I will probably end up giving Sam’s Bikes a call. Or maybe there is somewhere I could rent an 11 speed record or dura ace wheel?

Thanks to anyone who has a suggestion!

  7. Great information. Thank you. We arrive in Japan next week, visiting ehime. Then heading north probably by train and flying out of Sapporo early aug. Any hints on train travel.

  8. You are awesome! Thank you for such a great resource. We’re flying out from Sapporoin two days, and are starting our bike box hunt today.
